A 'redefinition of photography' may be needed says Nikon president Makoto Kimura, as new details emerge of an interview in which he hints at plans to launch a mirrorless camera system.

During the interview, which took place on 26 June, Kimura was asked if Nikon intends to launch its own compact camera system following the likes of Sony, Panasonic and Olympus.

Kimura is quoted as saying that while manufacturers of new camera systems may intend to take a share of the DSLR market, Nikon intends to retain its 'top position' in the DSLR category, while creating an 'entirely new domain'. Read more »

Sony has bolstered its DSLR A-mount lens line-up with the announcement of three new optics.

The 24mm f/2 Carl Zeiss Distagon T* ZA SSM, 35mm f/1.8 DT SAM and 85mm f/2.8 SAM will cost around £1,100, £220 and £175 respectively.

The 24mm and 85mm are full-frame lenses, while the 35mm is designed for DSLRs featuring an APS-C-size imaging sensor.

The 24mm and 35mm lenses are due to go on sale in September but the 85mm is not expected to be available until October, says Sony UK.

Nikon has released the first images captured in space by its D3S DSLR and interchangeable lenses.

The D3S, which Nikon said received no modifications, captured the images from the International Space Station.

The D3S was taken into space by NASA's Space Shuttle in April.

The pictures primarily depict the surface of the earth and nighttime scenes, says Nikon.

First announced last October, the D3S is a revamped version of Nikon's full-frame D3.

It is a professional DSLR boasting a redesigned imaging sensor, a top ISO of '102400', plus movie capture. Read more »

A photographer was shot dead when a gun he had asked the bride and groom to pose with for a wedding picture, accidentally went off.

Calogero Scimea, 45, was shot in the head as Valentina Anitra and Ignazio Licodia posed for photos before they set off for the church in Sicily, Italy last weekend.

The photographer - who had stepped in at the last minute when the official photographer fell ill - asked the couple to pose with rifles, reportedly owned by the couple's parents. Read more »
